As a promotional tactic at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year, Coldstone Creamery in downtown Iowa City, at the corner of Washington and S. Dubuque St., allowed Dance Marathon to create a special creation that would be sold to customers where a portion of the proceeds would go back to Dance Marathon.
“Dancer Fuel” was one of the few creations that were being promoted at the time along with creations made by Greek Life and the Pharmacy School.
“It was really interesting to see how many people came in to get the Dancer Fuel and how it was the most popular one. There was a lot of support for it, consistently. Almost every night at least two or three customers would ask for ‘Dancer Fuel’. A lot more people went out of their way to help out,” said Coldstone Manager Amanda Schmidt.
Coldstone is one of Dance Marathon’s sponsors and provides cups of ice cream for the dancers at the Big Event.
“Chocolate ice cream is always a great pick-me-up after you’ve been dancing for 17 hours,” said Amira Sufi, fourth-year dancer.
Along with chocolate, Coldstone offers other flavors to the dancers such as cake batter and vanilla.
Schmidt, a current senior at the University of Iowa, never had the chance to participate in Dance Marathon and admitted that she regrets it.
“I wish I would have”, she said, “I’ve seen a lot of great promotions and videos about it. The one thing I regret through my college career is not doing it. It’s amazing to see how many people are involved and how many people donate their time and efforts to a great cause.”
Well, it’s a good thing Schmidt can still register for DM 19! For everyone out there who hasn’t had the chance to participate yet and still would like to, there is still plenty of time to register. Just go to http://www.dancemarathon.org!
