Dance Marathon is officially 21 days away and even though our time as dancers for the year may be coming to an end, we cannot forget that cancer research and fundraising is done throughout the year by the rest of the world. The University of Iowa’s Dance Marathon is only a part of the millions of dollars fundraised for pediatric cancer. As members of the largest student organization at the University of Iowa, it is our responsibility to continue the legacy of DM after our time at Iowa. There are dozens of organizations and ways to give back to the community to stay involved with the fight in pediatric cancer. Below are a few examples of celebrities that have lived their lives dedicated to providing awareness for pediatric cancer and a great example of what we could be in the future.
Not only is she America’s sweetheart and my personal favorite in Hollywood, but Jennifer Aniston is extremely involved in charity. In 2008, she started the “Thanks and Giving” campaign for St. Jude’s Children Hospital. Throughout the past 6 years, she has stared in multiple commercials for St. Jude’s and stated that this was one of the most important causes that she supports. Jennifer has also hosted and started in the Stand Up to Cancer show in September of 2008. Beauty, brains, and passion…can she be any more perfect?
Jordin Sparks has been a great supporter of pediatric cancer since 2010. Jordin has had cancer affect those close to her and believes that no child should have to go through the pain and suffering associated with cancer. In 2010 she started creating awareness for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. Jordin participated in commercials advising the general public to start their own lemonade stand and donate the money to pediatric cancer research. Jordin can be seen wearing Alex’s Lemonade Stand merchandise on her tours, discussing the importance of the cause to her fans, and has visited lemonade stands all over the United States.
Two time Olympic champion snowboarder Shaun White has also joined many celebrities and St. Jude on the fight towards pediatric cancer. He participated in the 10th annual “Thanks and Giving” campaign in which Jennifer Aniston also participated in. While working on the campaign White stated that, “One of the most incredible experiences I have had is when I visited St. Jude and met the children. By supporting the St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign we can help St. Jude continue the lifesaving work being done every day.” White definitely takes home the gold after his amazing work with St. Jude’s.
These are only a few examples of celebrities that have dedicated their lives to giving back, all FTK. Don’t think that just because the event is almost over, that your duty as a dancer is. Follow these celebrities’ examples and support the fight of pediatric cancer throughout the rest of your life!
