“August was quite an exciting month for Dance Marathon marked by many events in recruitment and our incredibly successful Fore the Kids golf outing . With the first-year students getting settled in, we had an opportunity to reach a new audience and spread the mission of Dance Marathon to those looking for a sense of community. Whether it was in Kinnick Stadium at the Kickoff at Kinnick event or in the Main Lounge of the IMU for DM After Dark, Dance Marathon introduced itself to the incoming class, and many signed up to take part. This is only the beginning to a strong commitment to recruit as many driven students on campus as possible.
Additionally, I was able to participate in a student leader panel at the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership Retreat. Along with other student leaders on campus, I was able to discuss what it means to be in Dance Marathon, how it develops young leaders, and where are there areas to improve on campus in regards to reaching underrepresented audiences and involvement. Collaborating with students from other student organizations was extremely beneficial in our pursuit of being a truly representative organization on campus. Dance Marathon is making an effort to expand our community to all individuals, and we are always open and welcoming to suggestions on how to do just that.
September is looking to be a big month in Dance Marathon, and we look forward to making the largest impact on campus, in the community, and in the lives of our kiddos and families!
“Be on the lookout for NEW MERCH! We’ve been busy designing and order new merch for September Dancer Meetings!
The Multimedia team has been busy capturing all our Dance Marathon events this month from Lost Island to Fore The Kids.
We, as a Creative team, are pushing ourselves to create content for all facets of this amazing organization from Development to Sponsorship and Event to Family Relations. Don’t be afraid to ask us for help! That’s what we’re here for!”
“August has been an exciting and busy month for the Development team. We had an incredible turnout at our 2nd Annual Fore the Kids Golf Outing presented by C.H. Robinson and Beat Cancer. The weather was perfect, the fundraising was incredible, and everyone had fun on the course all for the kids.
In addition our team has been working hard to prepare for Kickoff to Kinnick coming up in September. We are incredibly excited for this event, and encourage everyone to participate.
Finally, we are thrilled to be back on campus as a unit and to get to work in order to further reach our goals as a leadership team.”
“Although August was a slower month for this committee, we are switching our gears into the Big Event Mode. As a committee, we went through and finalized the maps and pathways for the Big Event, which will help everyone navigate.”
Family Relations/ Hospital
“We hosted our Camp Wapsie Family Event on August 27th! This event brought local families and our DM members together at the YMCA Camp Wapsie in Coggon, IA to spend the afternoon together! We had activities such as archery, arts and crafts, gaga ball, disc golf, s’mores, and more! It was our last family event of the summer and it was a great one!
We have new families from the spring and the summer. We will begin offering new opportunities to be family representatives for these families! Contact Ben Linden or Riley Arnold if interested.”
“Fore the Kids was such a success and I cannot thank our sponsors enough for the support that they gave directly to Dance Marathon, but also the enthusiasm that they showed throughout the day on the course. I would like to thank the new sponsors that joined the Dance Marathon family at this event, as well as the existing ones that have continued to support us throughout the years through this event and other events that we put on.
Thank you to Scratch Cupcakery of Coralville for donating 300 cupcakes to our Dance Marathon after Dark event. It was a sweet way to welcome so many new Hawkeyes into our organization.”
“This past month we worked hard at recruiting new students into DM and helping the dancers in each captain/MCA’s group fundraise.”
“We implemented a new tracking system at Fore the Kids in order to successfully get all of our funds matched by CH Robinson. As a result, the event became our largest single fundraising event in Dance Marathon history!
Footballing canning and football concession volunteering begin September 2nd as the Hawkeye Football season kicks off.”
“We hosted DM After Dark and it was a huge hit! We welcomed many freshmen students to campus and introduced them to UIDM! During this event we had a DJ from 9PM-12AM playing the best jams. Additionally, we had Jazzercise come for a mini interactive dance half hour. There were many things for freshmen to do at this event which include making tie blankets for the kiddos in the hospital, use Hawkeye Photobooth for some adorable picture strips, buy our amazing merch starter packs for dancers, and eat plenty of dessert. Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time to help the Event team make this a huge success.
We ended the month with our second annual fall event, Slide into DM! We set up in Hubbard park from 4 PM – 7 PM with a 24 foot inflatable double slide and a bounce house for everyone to come check out. As far as treats went, we had sno cones and cotton candy available! We also sold our lime swag again at this event as well as registered more dancers for DM24!”
“We are working on expanding and diversifying our Humans of DM campaign!
We are planning and organizing lots of social media pushes and events for upcoming activities in the first few weeks of school. The DM website is fully updated and in full swing to welcome new registrants.”
Featured this month, our Dance Marathon Alumni Group. Here’s what happened in DMAG this month and July.
“DMAG has a Regional Liaison Program. Since Dance Marathon Alumni Group has 13,000+ alumni, which are located in all 50 states and some internationally, DMAG tries to increase alumni involvement by appointing local representatives, Regional Liaisons. They will host events, build local community relationships, and fundraise For The Kids. As of right now, we have four cities with Regional Liaisons, but hope to build the program in the future!
